Erin leaned back into the comfortable couch and puffed out her cheeks in amazement.

“Holy shit,” she snorted. “That’s one hell of a story, Ring.”

Adrian had been THE Soul of a victorious Trinity, forced to confront the guilt of his perceived abandonment of Cassie, the love of his life, on the day the world collapsed. For nigh on two years, he began building something to be a better man, to provide safety and security for any and all he could find, while suffering heart-cracking loss along his arduous journey. Kevin, his best friend currently sharing drinks with Nate and company, had taken the role of something called a Warden, which Erin likened to Nate’s role as her Shield. His “Saviour” had been a woman called Michelle, who witnessed the very first manifestation of the Dark that tormented the world, forced to bear witness to the start of humanity’s punishment deep in the jungles of Africa.

When he mentioned Michelle, there was a tightness to Adrian’s voice, a storm of grief and pain held close, and he talked of her only a little where her presence was pertinent to the tale of his Trinity. Erin surmised Michelle had been lost to the ravages of this damned war in the time between their victory and the present day. The look she shared with Abby was enough to tell her Adrian’s grief was still raw and fresh, so Erin pushed no further. She had learned these past four years that grief was an intensely personal emotion and could only be voiced when one was ready to speak of it; a lesson already learned too many times in her own young life.

Adrian and Abby’s tale was greatly condensed, but still the key points felt oddly familiar to Erin. Agents of the Dark working against humanity, some even disguised as friends, and the unending weariness of having to battle the living just as much as the dreaded plague of undead. It took a toll on the human soul, and both Adrian and Abby had been tested beyond the limits that anyone should. That they were both still here was a testament not only to their fortitude, but also their bond.

The easy manner in which they insulted each other brimmed with unspoken love, like an older brother and his snarky kid sister. It was impossible not to love them both, and that sparking flame of hope in Erin’s heart fanned into life a little brighter as she spent more time in their company. She hoped Abby was a part of the Trinity alongside Adrian. Even if she wasn’t, her presence at his side was clearly a comfort to him. Maybe she was a Torchbearer in her own right, and just did not know it.

“Here’s that present I promised you,” said Erin, handing over the flash drive containing her four years of journals. “My tale doesn’t quite save the world or knock the dead down where they stand with a single gunshot, but it’s got heroes aplenty. I feel the pain of your losses, mate, because I’ve had way too many of my own.
